Recently LessFilms had the opportunity to vist Europe and document the goings-on at the first ever LaConf. A two-day conference for Ruby on Rails developers in Paris, France. There was food, wine, more food, and plenty of great stories from the reluctant author @sandimetz, the always sexy @chadfowler, and many more exceptional human beings.

The LaConf mini documentary should be cut in a few weeks so be sure to monitor our Twitter feed closely (@lessfilms) and we’ll let you know where to watch it.

While we were in Vegas for MicroConf we stopped by the Pinball...

While we were in Vegas for MicroConf we stopped by the Pinball Hall Of Fame to play and to film a little documentary. What Tim Arnold and his team of volunteers are doing there is epic. The Hall of Fame is a non profit organization and gives 80% of every dollar it takes in to local social service charities. Last year they gave away half a million dollars. That’s a lot of quarters.

Sponsr.com is the new way for sponsors, promoters, and venues to combine forces and put on great events. We created this video to shed some light on the problems facing the sponsorship industry and to tell the world about this cool new platform.

When we started laying out a rough storyboard for this project the final color pallet of the Sponsr brand was still being tweaked. So our first pass at the storyboard was intentionally left monochromatic to focus more on the story and less on an undecided color scheme. The colors looked so cool that we stuck with them and added in accent colors from the final Sponsr brand.

Sponsr.com is a much needed platform that will help make some really cool events happen that may have never had a chance. We are super happy to have been a part of its launch.

Madison is an Excellent City, Wisconsin is an Excellent State

We love Madison, Wisconsin. Our friends Jim (referred to henceforth as “Big Tiger”) and Jen Remsik put on a mean trio of events. They have lured a couple of Florida boys away from our beloved home for their events enough times now that we have recurring cheese curd daydreams/nightmares (it goes both ways). Their beautiful city and their top flight events make it easy to put together great videos. If you’ve never attended one of their events register for their upcoming Snow*Mobile conf in February (we’ll be there!). Check out these videos from this year’s UXMad and Madison Ruby.

Your Conference Needs More Videos

As a conference organizer you wear a lot of hats and sometimes more than one at once. I haven’t experienced this conference-organizer-human-hat-rack syndrome personally but you could say that I have some friends that have. The juggling never seems to stop. Come show time it’s easy to forget about capturing the in-between moments. At LessConf, everything gets filmed for this reason. We never stop rolling and in the months leading up to the event we’re looking for more ways to capture what goes on before, after, and in between sessions.

If session videos are your bricks then the promos, sponsor “thank you’s”, etc. make up the mortar.

For scheduled activities it’s easy to plan your shots but if the cameras aren’t rolling for the 15 seconds where someone gets an eyebrow shaved off for an iPad you’re gonna have a bad time. Adding Some Fuel To The Engine

Here is a behind the scenes look at the design process of our latest film for EngineYard.com. This was our first go at working with an illustrator and facing the challenges of animating a cartoon like film.

After the pre-visualization was a lock we handed off our rough sketches to Mr. Andrew Power. An amazing young illustrator that we found on Dribbble.com. He took our write board doodles and turned them into tiny pieces art.

Now it was up to us to bring these little guys to life so we pushed around some keyframes, added a music bed and threw in some sound effects. Now the finished product is out there for the whole world to see.
